Live Lightning Map: How to Track Thunderstorms in Real Time

What a live lightning map shows, how real-time strike detection works, and how to follow storms safely on an interactive 3D map.

What a live lightning map shows

A live lightning map plots lightning strikes on a map within seconds of them happening. Instead of waiting for a forecast, you watch a thunderstorm build and move in real time — each strike appears as a point the moment it is detected.

How real-time detection works

Strikes are located by a global network of ground sensors (Blitzortung.org) that measure the radio pulse of each flash. Comparing the arrival times across many stations pinpoints where the bolt struck, and it is drawn on the map instantly.

Reading the map

  • Fresh strikes are bright; older ones fade, so you can see a storm's direction
  • Clusters mark the active core of a cell
  • Weather layers (rain, clouds, temperature) explain what is driving it

Track storms safely

  • Follow the 30/30 rule: if thunder comes within 30 seconds of the flash, head inside
  • Use the map to see whether a cell is moving toward you or away
  • Turn on location alerts so you are warned before a storm arrives
